Apenas humanos / Only human

……………………………………………………………………………….

I was born 48 years after women from the United States and Europe at the beginning of the last century began to organize and fight for better living conditions, access to the labor market and the right to vote. Nor was I born when they decided to create a date to remind the world that the feminine was and is, a fact, but also had and has rights. I do not remember exactly when I began to reflect on these issues - perhaps around the age of 10, when I heard about feminists burning brassieres in a public square - but I clearly remember questioning the value of the United Nations Organization's initiative to institute , In 1977, the 8 of March like International Women's Day. For me, at that moment, everything had already been won.

I was twenty years old, there were three I had left my parents' house to study journalism in another city and had been in the labor market for eighteen months. With my trainee salary, plus the gains from free-lance jobs, I had gained my economic independence: I paid all my bills and enjoyed the unique sensation of walking with my own legs; Of being the owner of my life. I felt really strong and, amidst the dazzle and myopia of this egotrip, I did not think that my fellow men would earn thirty percent more than I did for the same job, and firmly believed that all the women of my generation had access to opportunities equivalent to mine. .

Holy alienation!

The first shock of reality happened the day I arrived earlier and came across the cleaning lady - a girl my own age - in front of the bedroom mirror, trying on the dress I had just bought to use on my 21st birthday . Disoriented by the flagrant, she lost her voice as she tried to explain herself. In the face of this embarrassed silence, I realized the difference between being able to fulfill dreams and only being able to frustrate them. I did not let her take off the dress, I did not allow her to humiliate herself in apologies, I did not dismiss her. She has worked in my house for over fifteen years. We were allied in several battles fought over the time we live. I was fortunate to see her graduate in nursing technique and get a job in the profession.

The second wake-up call came months later, when, in solidarity, I accompanied a friend to a clinic to have an abortion. Aside from the emotional cost of sharing a decision that was more than painful for her, I experienced panic over the possibility of being caught in the act that is considered a crime in Brazil. We have survived, me and her, unblemished before the law, but marked in what is painful in the soul. My friend today has four grown and well-bred children, but to this day she remembers, with a startle, what we live in that clinic on an autumn afternoon.

The third 'wake up to reality, Vera!' came years later when, during the promotions cycle at the firm where I worked, I saw a colleague and friend whom everyone recognized: should be appointed to a management, be deferred because of a man who, even without having her skills, was placed in the post because he was 'head of the family'. The justification she heard from the one who made the decision, as something very natural and amenable to being accepted, until she informed him that she was herself the mother of a family and cared for two children alone. My friend today holds an executive position in a big company and laughs every time, jokingly, I ask her if she already sent her business card to those who one day did not recognize her talent.

I could continue enumerating here all the situations that denied my 20 years old certainties. All the circumstances that led me to recognize that the independence and autonomy that I was able to conquer, still so young, were not (and still are not) guaranteed to all the women of my and of other generations. I could recapitulate all the facts that led me to conclude that even the path I walked like mine was paved by those women who occupied squares and avenues when I was not even born. I could, but it would be an endless post, so many were the events that rubbed and still rub the crudity of the real world in my face.

And it is because of this reality that, in advance, I celebrate here the International Women's Day, whose importance I once questioned so much. I celebrate it not as an occasion for festivities - a pretext to distribute red roses, but as a date that invites us to reflect on what we are today, where we came from and where we want to go; as a moment to recalibrate strength and strengthen ties, without losing clarity or sweetness. A date to inspire men and women of all nationalities, races, ages, beliefs, religions and gender choices, to seek understanding, harmony, cooperation. A date to simply make us believe that the day will come when we will not need to mark the calendar on the day that reminds us that we are only human.

Entre chefleras e colombinas / Among chefleras and columbines

I start writing this post not sure about its theme. I do not know if I will approach the end of daylight saving in Brazil, the Carnival season, or the dream I had with myself wandering through São Paulo without knowing who I was. I am up to make a decision when a friend calls me to share that one of our dearest friends, 53 years old, is seriously sick.

Speechless and unable to react to such news, I sit on the floor and cry silently. When the call ends, my first reaction is to stand up and run to the porch in the next room to look at the cheflera my sick friend gave me eighteen years ago. Giving me that plant was her kind way of sealing the closure of a project we run together. A well-succeeded work, which in fact depended much more on her than on me, but bonded us. It brought us the opportunity to better know each other and to recognize ourselves in a lot of things we had in common.

Mentally, I review my friend's smile, revisit all the positive energy she has always conveyed and realize that she is there, pulling a lock of hair from her forehead with the gesture that is so peculiar to her, asking me, unpretentiously: About what will be your post this Saturday?
“
Faced with my possibility of just stuttering an attempt to answer, she interrupts me impatiently and urgently, to resume the point at which, at the beginning of this post, I was interrupted:

"Shiiiiiii! Today, at midnight, DST ends. Therefore, we, who are in the portion of the country affected by it, have to delay our watches in an hour. We will earn an extra hour to sleep, to dream, to watch the sun rising and to warm up for the carnival next week. Do not waste a second, Vera Dias! If the night was badly slept, haunted by nightmares, jump from this bed, wash that face and have a strong strong coffee. Nothing that a good awakening does not cure! ".

... Nothing that a good awakening does not cure.

And here I stand before the mirror; washed face, brushed teeth, enjoying what was left of my cup of coffee, while adjusting my columbine costume. It is so old that until I started thinking about what I would write in this post, I could only rescue it in dreams - or would they be nightmares? - In which I wandered dressed in pink through a faded Sao Paulo, without the memory of myself, or a clue of where pierros and harlequins would be ... Well, here I am, me = columbine, ready for the revelry. Because playing this carnival is what I can do best to honor this friend, who fights for life today. Putting my block on the street in her name is the prayer that I chose to ask the gods for the one who has always smiled at me through a cheflera.

Horey, my dear friend! I'm sure that in 2018 Carnival we'll rip our fantasies together.
