Ela
Peguei o celular e
vi a janelinha do zaaaaap piscando pra mim. Deduzi que o som viesse dali e a
toquei.
Me derreti toda, né?! E tratei logo de achar
o jeito pra responder: ‘sim, estou aqui e usando o zaaap’.
a estudar francês…
Entrar

She was not an email user, did not have a Facebook
profile and rarely navigated through the web. My reader Laura Dionísio
Albuquerque, 84 years old, would still living an analogical life if one of her
great-grandchildren had not given her a smartphone as Mothers’day gift three years
ago. More than that, he enabled her to use it.
"He worked so hard to make that possible that I
was embarrassed to say I just needed a cell phone to talk through," she
says over a Skype, a facility she came to know through the same great-grandson’s
"training marathon." A marathon that left her exhausted for almost a
month, because in addition to having to memorize all the "little
windows" on the device screen , she had to learn quickly " how to
operate them". Without previous notice,
the great-grandson kept diligently checking her progress.
"It was through one of these not scheduled
checking points that I learned how to use zaaap," she says, referring to
whatsapp (an instant messaging application - explanation for readers who do not
happen to know it yet). And she keeps going:
"I was in a restaurant near the house, where I
usually have lunch, and then I suddenly heard the siren sound coming from my
bag. I picked up the cell phone and saw the zaaaaap's window winking at me. I
concluded I had to touch it and when I did, I got the picture of my great-grandson
grinning with this message: “hey great-grandma, I just wanted to make sure you
were there.' With my heart warmed, I
helped to find the way to respond: 'Yes, I'm here and using zaaap' As the rest
of the family learned that I already knew how to use whatsapp, I found myself
in the middle of a zap festival. It was
so intense, that I asked my great-grandson to change the siren alert for
something less alarming. He got so proud of me. "
Proud and excited So excited, he challenged her to a
series of online activities, such as: playing dominoes and solitaire with
virtual opponents; holding a family meeting via Skype; taking a Thai cooking
course; learning French ... Laura passed "with praise" for all of
them and accepted many other challenges proposed by the great-grandson and
other members of the family. In fact, the experience has been so enriching that
she decided to challenge herself to do something she has never done before
every month.
"With this cell phone story, I realized that
when you begin to wonder when you last did something for the first time, it is
a sign that your life is becoming boring. The insight came when I saw myself in
front of the concentration of first times in this smartphone. Okay, I was
already over eighty, but so what? If I have found how to be young despite of my
age, I have to take this chance, haven’t I?". She says.
Contacting 2xTrinta and telling me her story, to see
if I'd be interested in posting it, was the challenge she set for this June
that just started. A proof that I would even consider easy, but which she
explains is not so simple, since, she deduces: I would ask for a photo and, at least,
his great-grandson’s name, and she can not offer either of them, because he,
the great-grandson, does not want to "look like a blooper in the social
network."
Really, I would love to illustrate this text with the
photo of this duo who starred in such a special story. However, if keeping it
without faces is the condition to share the experience of an octogenarian who
found how to keep herself young from the use of a smartphone, I agree in making
myself a blooper. After all, how long has it been since I made it for the first
time?
